![]() You’re probably using the Balanced power plan. Select “Hardware and Sound,” select “Power Options,” and click the “Change plan settings” link next to the power plan you’re using. Windows would then automatically adjust your brightness. For example, you could have it set to a high brightness level when you’re plugged in, and a lower one when you’re on battery power. You can set different display brightness levels on your laptop or tablet based on whether or not you’re plugged into an outlet or not. How to Automatically Adjust Brightness When You’re Plugged In With some monitors, you may also be able to adjust your screen’s brightness with an app like ScreenBright or Display Tuner, though they won’t work with all monitors. You’ll often find these buttons near the power button on a computer monitor. You may instead need to press some sort of “Menu” or “Options” button before you can access an on-screen display that will allow you to increase or decrease the brightness. Look for “brightness” buttons on the display and use them to adjust the display brightness. However, if you’re using a desktop PC with an external display–or even connecting an external display to a laptop or tablet–you’ll need to adjust this setting on the external display itself, and you usually won’t be able to do it automatically. Most of the methods in this article are designed for laptops, tablets, and all-in-one PCs. That’s a problem that nobody but the most technically competent tinkerer is going to solve themselves, so it’s time for a visit to the repair shop.How to Adjust Brightness Manually on an External Display If the screen is very dark, almost impossible to see in a normal room, then there’s a chance the backlight has failed. On a Mac, click the Apple menu, select System Preferences, select the Display icon, click on the Night Shift tab and select ‘Off’ from the schedule drop-down menu. In Windows, night mode can be deactivated by clicking on the speech bubble-like icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen and selecting the Night Light icon. This is a relatively new feature in PCs and Macs that is meant to reduce the amount of blue light belting out of your screen, which has been linked with sleeplessness. If your screen hasn’t so much dimmed, but gone a funny yellow colour, you may have accidentally activated the night mode. You should see an Adaptive Brightness setting here, which you can switch off. On the next screen select the advanced settings option and then click the + sign next to Display. In Control Panel, search for Power Options, then click Change Plan Settings. If you wish to turn this off, first unplug the laptop from the power adapter, and then open the Windows Control Panel (search for it if you don’t know where it lives). Normally, this is a good thing, but we’ve seen it behave erratically on some models.
